The Interview
36 MINS LISTEN

In this episode, host Karl McKeever is joined by Daniel Lundh, co-founder and COO of Europe’s largest unstaffed grocery chain, LIFVS.

The likes of Amazon Go may be seen as representing the future for urban convenience retail, but LIFVS unstaffed, digital supermarkets are already busy transforming rural Sweden.

By the start of the two thousands almost sixty per cent of Sweden’s grocery stores had closed in just two decades, with ninety per cent of those closures in rural locations. Launched in 2018, Stockholm-based LIFVS set about reversing this trend…with the help of technology.

With its commitment to bringing access to fresh food to local communities, it could teach others a thing or two about how to enjoy retail success in low traffic areas and rural communities.

In this episode, we explore the story behind the LIFVS brand; why it classes itself as a technology start-up first and retailer second; and how its business model – with lower labour and store operating costs at its heart - has been key to success.
